After growing up riding in Michigan, Emily now lives and trains in Somerset Virginia. Along with her husband Jeff, a sport horse veterinarian, and her son Nicholas, she runs Brickland farm, a full service eventing facility. Emily’s inexhaustible energy and unwavering passion to her profession have led the US Team to name her to the USEF Developing Rider Training List on six separate horses. In addition she was named to the short list for the 2011 Pan American Games.
The ability to consistently produce horses to these high standards comes from a desire to truly connect with each horse that comes into her life. With skills and techniques learned from time spent with great competitors and coaches such as Jim Wofford, David and Karen O’Connor, and Gerd Zeuther, she is able to find a unique approach to help realize each horse’s potential. This same individualized approach is apparent in her teaching as well. Emily demonstrates immense patience and understanding with all her students, whatever their capabilities. But her true professionalism shines through as she strives to make a difference in those at the lower levels. As a USEA ICP Level 4 certified instructor, demand for her time is always very high. Her hard work, discipline, and attention to detail are contagious and are demonstrated in her students’ success.
