3 Things That Pony Club Taught Me
Equestrian Resources
4 minute read
My name is Ellie, I work at Kerrits. I joined Pony Club when I was 9 years old and remained a member until I was 18. To this day, horses are a big part of my life both in my career and personal life thanks to Pony Club.
What is the United States Pony Club (Pony Club) exactly?
Pony Club is an international organization that aims to encourage young people to ride horses and ponies, while also teaching them valuable horsemanship skills. It was originally founded in England and has since expanded to over 20 countries. Members participate in a variety of equestrian activities, such as show jumping, dressage, eventing, and mounted games. Respecting horses, as well as promoting teamwork and sportsmanship, is a top priority for the organization.
Pony Club membership is open to all ages and experience levels—whether you are just starting or have been actively involved with horses for years.
How has Pony Club shaped who I am?
There are many components of my work ethic, character, and lifestyle with horses that I attribute to this organization. In adulthood, work/relationships/school/life can be as unpredictable as a 1000+ lb. animal. The confidence that I carry today is rooted in the organizations and people that influenced me during my upbringing, Pony Club being one of them.
1. Safety and Horsemanship
The most amazing thing about Pony Club is that it is for ALL levels. Prior to joining, I had zero experience with horses other than the occasional ride at a festival and a vacation at a Dude Ranch. Luckily, I had landed in just the right place to build my confidence around horses as well as other riders. A big part of Pony Club is learning how to handle situations with confidence, knowledge, and a clear mind. You can have the most well-trained horse in the world but there will be a day when something will not go according to plan.
2. Teamwork Makes The Dream Work
Pony Club is much more than being in the saddle. In fact, most meetings are held with both of your feet on the ground, working on expanding your educational understanding of equestrianism. You work together as a team for many events like Quiz, Rallies, Pony Club Camp, etc. It separates the individuality of the sport and creates a space for people to work towards the same goal or outcome.
Working at Kerrits, teamwork is a crucial part of what makes our business successful. We all come together for the good of the brand!
3. Horse Girl Energy
I've found that horse girls are a force to be reckoned with. We have three strides: walk, trot, and work. It takes a certain breed to willingly muck stalls, run around with hay in our hair, and put your horse's happiness/wellbeing at the top of your priorities. This lifestyle is a big commitment and responsibility. In my experience with Pony Club, it truly ignited my #horsegirlenergy.
I live and breathe horses, it wasn't "just a phase." I actively try to apply that type of energy to all areas in my life.
